smART Exchange: Veterans and the Arts
Join the Arts Council of Johnson County for smART Exchange: Veterans and the Arts on Sept. 25, 2018 at 6:30 pm. Our panel will discuss how the arts benefit veterans as a creative outlet, tool for well-being and career option. A reception will follow the discussion. smART Exchange also kicks off free veteran art classes at the Arts & Heritage Center. Panelists include: Dr. Art DeGroat, Walter D. Disney, Todd Navrat, and Joey Williams.
Moderated by Rob Hughes, KMBC 9. Presented in partnership with After Action Network & Johnson County Park & Recreation. Supported by the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission & the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

smART Exchange: Healing and Art – November 9, 2017
Panelists: Mary Susan Dubinski, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art; Sandy Jackson, Truman Medical Center; Dr. Schoen Kruse, Kansas City University, Associate Dean of Integrated Learning, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Associate Professor of Pharmacology; Professor Brianne Fulton Miller, Assistant Professor of Art at Cottey College. Today, health professionals, artists and arts organizations work in diverse settings across a wide spectrum of populations, assisting people through all life stages. Join the Arts Council of Johnson County for a discussion on health & wellness and the arts. Guest speakers will explore integrating art strategies, including Visual Thinking Strategies, into health & wellness practices as well as into training for medical students. A reception with light hors d’oeuvres will follow.

smART Exchange: Hospitality and Culinary Academy and Hardesty Renaissance- July 2016
Panelists: Charlie Hopper, Hardesty Renaissance; Aaron Prater, Chef, Johnson County Community College Hospitality and Culinary Academy; and Andrea Broomfield, Food Historian, Johnson County Community College examined how history, community development, economy, and tradition shape our community’s local cuisine.  We also discussed how JCCC and Hardesty Renaissance can build a partnership to support KC’s local food systems.

smART Exchange: Infusing Creativity and Learning – September 2015
Panelists Jean Hendrickson, Education Consultant, Oklahoma A+ Schools; Angel Mercier, Arts Education Program Director, Johnson County Community College Performing Arts Series; and Jeff Poulin, Arts Education Program Coordinator, Americans for the Arts discussed how engaging students in the creative process can help them better understand arts and non-arts subjects in school and discuss the A+ Schools model and its pilot program for the state of Kansas.

Panelists Holly Storck-Post, Library as Incubator Project; Sarah Star and m.o.i., Kansas City –based artists; and Kathleen Morgan, Foundation Director for the Lawrence Public Library explored how the library fits into what’s happening in the arts community and how the library can better serve artists

smART Exchange: ARTicipation – Art in Service, Epsten Gallery – July 2014
How can the arts serve the needs of a more inclusive audience? The roundtable will also be an opportunity to share information with our community’s cultural organizations on how to better serve audiences with dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges, help connect individuals, the arts, and health/human services professionals to better serve this audience, and establish a network of such services that are available to the public.

smART Exchange: Public Art and Civil Placemaking, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art – October 2013
Hesse McGraw, artist and Vice President for Exhibition & Public Programs at San Francisco Art Institute; Mel Ziegler, artist and Department of Art Chair for Vanderbilt University; and Joe Waters, Bureau Chief & Director of Facilities for Johnson County Government will lead a conversation about public art’s role in quality of life and creating a dynamic, vibrant and engaging place to live and work. The panel will also discuss the development of a new Master Plan for Johnson County’s 1% for Public Art Program.

smART Exchange: Artist Residencies, Lawrence Arts Center – January 2013
Join us for a smART exchange at the Lawrence Arts Center featuring Sans Façon, a collaborative partnership between French architect Charles Blanc and British artist Tristan Surtees, artist Yvonne Mullock, and Lawrence Arts Center executive director Susan Tate. They will lead a conversation about innovative artist residency programs around the globe and the potential for expanded residency programming at the Lawrence Arts Center.
