Annually, Charlotte Street honors three exceptional Kansas City-based visual artists with unrestricted cash awards and a professionally curated exhibition at esteemed non-profit art institutions. This year's Awards and exhibition received major underwriting from the Jedel Family Foundation.

Since 1997, Charlotte Street has acknowledged outstanding artistic accomplishment and promise while providing Kansas City artists with essential, career-advancing financial support and critical attention. As of this year, 106 visual artists and 29 performing artists in the Kansas City region have received this highly regarded award.

The 2023 recipients were selected by Tempestt Hazel, Co-Director/Co-Founder of Sixty Inches From Center in Chicago, Raphael Fonseca, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art at the Denver Art Museum, and JoAnne Northrup, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

Ruben Castillo is a visual artist and educator investigating themes of intimacy, queerness, archival history, and the body using a range of media including print, drawing, sculpture/installation, and video. His most recent imagery draws from photographs and documents, seeing the ordinary as a site for transformative potential and feeling. Castillo’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and is included in collections such as the Mulvane Art Museum (Topeka, KS), Crossroads Hotel (Kansas City, MO), Mexic-Arte Museum (Austin, TX), National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago, IL), the Zuckerman Museum of Art (Kennesaw, GA), and the Turner Print Museum (Chico, CA). Ruben was born in Dallas, TX and received his MFA in Visual Art from the University of Kansas and a BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute. He has taught printmaking and drawing at the Kansas City Art Institute and Johnson County Community College and is currently an Assistant Professor of Printmaking & Expanded Media in the Department of Art at Skidmore College.

Sean Nash is a visual artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, and social engagement with human and more-than-human worlds. His ongoing work with food, fermentation, and farming has led to the inclusion of cast vegetables in large-scale shaped paintings that describe complex ecosystems. He explores connections between fermentation, microbes, and queer and trans* identity in his visual work and published writing. Nash received an MFA from Yale University in 2005 and has exhibited nationally, including solo shows at The Kniznick Gallery in Waltham, MA, Plug Projects in Kansas City, MO, and Black Ball Projects in Brooklyn, NY.

SunYoung Park explores the space between imagination and reality. The use of diverse materials represents her visual language as she explores contrasting surfaces, emphasizing ceramics and mixed media. She says, “The contrasting qualities in my artwork create visual puzzles that suggest a multitude of meanings. I regard my practice as a journey to find the essence of an object, experience and how it relates to reality.” Park earned her BFA and MFA from Hong-Ik University Seoul, Korea and an MFA from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

AnticKS & MOdels + My theater to your eyes: Kahlil Robert Irving marks the artist’s first institutional exhibition in Kansas and a return to the central Midwest. Irving’s work engages with the current post-industrial landscape and grapples with how tools and technology challenge perceptions of what we see and how we understand information. Irving is interested in using materials to engage abstract ideas around perception and legibility. Growing up in St. Louis, a city that has experienced a sharp population decline in recent years, the artist is constantly learning stories about places that need to be memorialized and not forgotten—places that continue to go unrecognized and unappreciated for their significance.

Irving critically engages the Nerman Museum’s architecture by trespassing its gallery divisions and boundaries. As visitors navigate the walkway, they encounter sculptures of ceramic, painted foam, fabric, granite, marble, wood, in addition to artifacts, and discovered objects drawn from the artist’s personal collection. With AnticKS & MOdels, the artist’s goal is both to fool the eye and the opposite: to make space for viewers to experience more. Irving uses material culture to reflect his own life and memorialize the present. Learn more about this exhibition at nermanmuseum.org.

Weda Skirts hail from the Flint Hills of Kansas, where bluegrass, folk, roots, and pop music blend to bring forth a group of original songstress darlings ready to entertain any room. These women continue to grow and evolve as a group, keeping originals as the core of their repertoire, but throwing in their homemade renditions of popular rock and folk songs.

Formerly "The Skirts," "Weda" is the universal mother, sister, and daughter, a name that reflects their view of the world and a new chapter in their lives and work. "The Skirts" were born when former Elexa & The Hitchhikers members Elexa Dawson and Melissa Tastove joined with their friend Sarah Bays, who had recently taken up the upright bass in the summer of  2009. Emily Wilson was quick to join them on mandolin. Rachel Allai was added the night before she recorded "Many Moons", The Skirts' first full-length studio album with her fiddle. The group recorded their second album, Mother in 2017.

At the beginning of 2019, they reintroduced themselves as Weda Skirts. In 2024, fiddler Rachel Allai is out on maternity leave. We wish the Allai family, and all our families well!

In this solo recital, three master composers tell compelling musical stories. Chopin’s Op. 28 Preludes are concise masterpieces that convey a tremendous range of emotion, for which Abduraimov has become famous. Debussy’s gentle miniatures are tender reflections on childhood. And Mussorgsky’s Pictures at the Exhibition brings painting of Mussorgsky’s friend to life. Described by The New York Times as the “master of all he surveys” and with The Washington Post noting to “keep your ear on this one," Abduraimov’s captivating performances continue to receive international praise. Following his debut success at Carnegie Hall in 2015, recent seasons have seen Abduraimov work with leading orchestras worldwide. An award-winning recording artist, he released his first concerto disc in 2014 on Decca Classics which features Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 and Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No.1 with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai under Juraj Valčuha. His debut recital CD won both the Choc de Classica and the Diapason Découverte. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 1990, Abduraimov began to play the piano at the age of five as a pupil of Tamara Popovich at Uspensky State Central Lyceum in Tashkent. He is an alumnus of Park University’s International Center for Music where he studied with Stanislav Ioudenitch, and now serves as the ICM’s artist-in-residence.

John Depew is a Kansas-based musician, songwriter, and traveler with a knack for combining traditional sounds with thoughtful lyrics and intriguing musicality. He has been described as a “midwestern Nick Drake” (Ted Gioia, musicologist) and jokingly refers to his own music as “progressive old-time.” He enjoys exploring new places in both the natural world and in the wilderness within. Combining philosophy, farming, adventure, and family, John’s songs tackle subjects that are often left behind by the mainstream. He is Kansas State Mandolin Champion for 2022 and a member of KCAIC’s Kansas Touring Artist Roster.  Learn more at https://johndepewmusic.wordpress.com/.

If inclement weather occurs, the concert will be moved from the Outdoor Amphitheater to the Full Event Space indoors.

[more+]

[more+]
