Volunteer Opportunities

Shooting Stars (SS) Scholarship, Recognition and Awards Program

Each fall Johnson County high school seniors are nominated by their arts teacher to compete in one of nine scholarship categories [Literature (prose/poetry), Two-Dimensional Art, Three-Dimensional Art, Photography, Strings, Theatre Performance (including voice), Theatre Production & Design, Voice Classical, and Winds & Percussion.] Over 100 students from more than 20 area high schools participate in the program each year.

After being nominated, students attend the Prep Workshop to learn program specifics and audition/portfolio preparation tips from previous SS judges. Nominated students either audition or submit a portfolio to be reviewed by local arts professionals during Audition/Portfolio Judging Day in late January/early February.

At the Shooting Stars Gala (hosted by Johnson County Community College and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art each spring), guests view student artwork (visual art exhibition, segments of performing arts auditions and readings of literary works) during the Opening Reception, and help celebrate the student artists at the Awards Ceremony where all students are recognized and scholarships are awarded.
